Adorno

I think I have read about Theodore Adorno, not sure why I think I have. But it's a bit like that book talking about books I have not read, in what sense can I remember a whole book. I have a limited 1.5 second memory store, and if I really rehearsed some bits may stick. I recall something about Odysseus being a capitalist, nothing too impressive he does lie a lot more a decent double glazing salesman, and I recall that aphorism each time I go to a cinema I leave stupider and worse, it's the american language. The comparative adjectives are grammatically correct, and the lack of elegance and sophistication, perfect, to describe a cinema visit. Pretentious mais non je proteste. It reminds me of Top Gun just after Tom gets a ragging from the tall supermodel expert on tactical engagements (well you had to see the film it made perfect sense at the time) and the Iceman (a classic aryan blonde quarterpounder lingerie model himself) says whatever the text books say that was the most ballsey move I have ever seen Maverick. That's how I regard Adorno's attack on modern cineman.

But apparently Adorno is a major intellectual. What happened if you'll excuse the narcissism is sometime while I was on the flight to Bangalore, the Library invented an Adorno Industry. So they have little touches like he used to call himself Archibald the King of the Hippos, I bet. And then there is this attack on camping which is just for you Ollie. The bourgeois seek out camping holidays so that they can return to nature escaping from work. Not real nature but the idea of nature, of not being tied down. In fact if you couldn't show off your sun tan to fellow office workers on your return from holiday there would be no point in taking a holiday. Free time has meaning only through work. But that's not the point. The camping industry then takes over and starts selling those special lamps and camping fire things hey whatever stuff you take on camping holidays how am I supposed to know do I look like one of the corrupt Labour Home Secretaries who thrills to camping. Thus the industry tames the desire for freedom. Which is why he argued you could never go to the cinema regardless of the moral vigilance outwith completing selling out to bourgeois etc. Now this Adorno Teddy Adorno, the tentative dogmatist, the Trascendental Homelessperson, hey that's me. And his critique on camping has a lot of relevance for Irom Chanu Sharmila's hope for an eco-friendly tribal redevelopment economy but only if I could explain it to her and if I look in her eyes my brain turns to mush which doesn't help.

This one (Adorno) was invented while I was on the flight down from Heathrow. I am pretty sure he never existed before. I recall reading some secondary text mentioning Adorno but it's not a particularly memorable name too easily confused with Adolpho, Archiebald King of the Hippos now is memorable but only in a film with the guy who did Chocolate Factory not that guy the other guy did the murdering barber and I think he is the mad hatter in the new Alice not that I would actually go to a cinema. And he is not saying that; you are being far too literal. This guy he sounds interesting. Apparently he had blazing rows with people over minor academic points being unable to forgive an old friend over oh I dunno but I like that in the man, shows commitment. And he could see that Heidegger was fascist to the very core of the sweat of his syntax or something like that. You have to admire someone who finally says something. Even if he does have that idea of constellation. In many ways a simple attack on Husserl's dialectic. Consciousness reveals only untruth by it. History or more the Purana with its ages either a golden past or a golden future. Nonsense, internally driven drivel. It's so clear. So reason pushes out the boat into the lake of madness and if we are lucky they'll be one hell of a storm and let's not project too far ahead else where is the fun. Hmm.

But he definitely has been made up by that whole cartoon guide for the perplexed let's simplify complicated continentals to make ordinary people with more time on their hands and no need to work think they understand their ideas and as soon as I go for any of even the shorter easier texts I will discover I haven't a clue what the man is talking about. Luckily my main task for today is to catch the 7.45 to Kottayam. Like any Bus the 7.45 will most likely leave around 8.05 but how hard can it be. Crashing through the prison walls Irom Chanu Sharmila I am Desmond M Coutinho I am here to wescue you.

I think we shall both benefit from the silent contemplation of the next few days, and I at least shall obtain many books on Syriac, and an Iron Cross, plus some kerala chips for the boys but nothing else I must stay focussed.

Exactly

I knew you would understand me, that is why we are friends. And just working up to my request O R might be a little overfamiliar with the Lord of all, the holy mighty the holy immortal one, but in a sense by analogy and with reference to the Scholastic view that Intentionality is the key to Ontology, you say the tetragammaton as you might say to a young debutante while holding her firmly having waltzed onto a Juliet Balcony, "Now I am going to kiss you and I am going to kiss you very hard." not just with cuttingly clipped vowels, consonants sharp as Gurkha blades but with passion and intensity and if she doesn't burst out laughing returning to the Tetragammaton the very world might burst into flames what what, and when it comes down to it I never bought into the rather platitudinous oversimplistic cover story that sometime in the seventh century people forgot how to pronounce Hebrew so the Masoretes invented vowel points. Same thing happens to Syriac, from Estrangela no vowel points we get vowel points in East and West Syriac. Now I am not suggesting an alien invasion, or some secret code embedded into vowel points that revealst the twoo meaning etc oh no sir. I am saying, do I look like I fell off a Xmas Tree. For thousands of years you expect me to believe no one has any problem pronouncing HebrewAramaic Syriac outwith vowel points and then suddenly in the seventh century there is a spontaneous Alzeimer's Dementia that only affects people of middle-eastern origin as regards their script. And let's not start blaming the CIA coz the evidence for a pre-Masonic CIA frankly.

Anyway this is the thing, I wrote to Fr Jose as I had said I would, the man is a star. He replied that he did not feel able or something like that to help with my request (to help rescue the Princess). But he will press on with OCI for me. Which means I can help her on me own once I figure out how the buses work here. That young Luke Skywalker never knew how lucky he was with his own chauffeur driven Meridian Falcon. If he had to rely on public transport he would never have made it to the Death Star.

Anyway so plan B meanwhile. I have written to President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Singh. I am going to send them a copy of Burning Bright Irom Chanu Sharmila's story. And ok maybe the Liberation Theologian had a small point. So the British began the decline in the once princely state, divide and conquer, setting up long term vendettas between the hill and valley tribes, and gradually turning a self-sufficient economy into one designed to provide for an external colonial power. But that's no excuse for India taking on the role of the British and completely screwing over the country. India has ruled Manipur and the North East for the past 60 years. Anyway he had a small point. But although I condemn natural parents who abuse their only child for two years, I don't believe that gives the foster parents any excuse for torturing and murdering the child once she is in their care.

So the plan next was to write to my cousin Uncle the Archbishop of Calcutta, Cousin-Uncle means no relation at all and please don't embarrass me by pretending we are family. However I figure I could write to him. That's when I realized how old everyone else is. My Uncle Wolfie, the once head of the family, now very frail. He is 80. Retired judge if I had been a decent Injun I would have arranged to fly over for his 80th party last Sunday but I didn't. So anyway I thought why don't I ask my cousin-Uncle the Archbishop of Calcutta if he would inquire of the Indian Government after the health of Irom Chanu Sharmila. In order to remind him I am his cousin-nephew I would relate the humourous and therefore slightly scandalous tale of how when he was a mere Bishop in the 1980s whenever he would return home to his blood family, he would swear like a trooper. Why well to let them know he hadn't changed. And they were all proud of his essential holiness etc. But me brat that I was, becuase he didn't know they had a stranger among them, I was schocked outraged Sir, and told him that it wasn't right, it wasn't good enough, pure cowardice, surely his family would know outwith etc. And I felt he should make a public apology for his private behaviour else he was a hypocrite.

I have never outgrown my brathood. He did so that next Sunday mass explaining what he had been doing whenever he returned home and vowing never to swear profanities again. Problem is he is 83 now and an Emeritus Archbishop. I have no idea how to get in touch with him. His Sister Diana married Iggy Pereira, whose sister married the brother of my mother. Only in India would that give me any rights to embarrass him.

So plan C but don't take this badly if you read this far. Is can you do something magickal for Sharmila, Irom is her family name and I think Chanu is some kind of title. I do wonder why we act in the world since it is unfolding as it should and our interference will only likely screw things up further. But if you have a chance to see her, there are films on the Web, she is so tiny and beautiful. Just as pure mythology, she is the sleeping beauty. I am that green ogre or the donkey or something. So tiny and frail.

Obviously if I were God or the President or something like that. I should repeal the Armed Forces shoot to kill and we wont' charge you Act. Because it is symbolic. If an Indian wants to shoot a poor person he shoots them. Why do you need a separate act protecting you from the law it's your law, your judges. Then I would give her a position in the upper house. Or she could stand election for State CM or just do the Ghandi-ji thing and give spiritual advice to the people. The place is a caricature of India. They believe there is oil natural gas and Uranium of all things under the earth. If that's true then if history is any judge it will not be possible to save the people.

What do you think O R. The beauty of magick, high magick, real magick is that the apparent details though of interest to crossword compilers,

We have
1) A beautiful frail princess of ten thousand years stowed away in an impregnable fortress, hospital gaol in Imphal the capital of Manipur, nine hills surrounding a valley can't miss it.

2) No economy to speak of, loads of money pumped into NGOs, Drug runners, Separatists, Armed forces, Police. Homo homini lupus. A hobbesian society before the social contract.

3) I think the best scenario if we could manage it is for her, Irom Chanu Sharmila to be brought into pure Existence, dreamless sleep, what the Iatrophanes call a coma, have her maintained on many machines that go beep until the end of the Juga of Kali.

Once I get the OCI I will have constitutional rights and I shall go visit her and her country. Who knows it may not really exist it may be pure myth. If that were true and she is not real then I really must meet her.

Tell me about it

Now I know I should have said nothing. I have that wink that Doc Holliday suffered from that kicked off the whole OK Corral thing. I was having a really good Bible Study. We had a real expert talking about covenant, none of the standard stuff but exciting eisegesis. We go back to the text and then the Rabbi interiorizes and with the God-within introduces a radical meaningful life changing etc. It was beautiful. Plus the lecturer was hilarious. Very witty very funny, took the piss out of everyone. I thought it best to take cover and he was far more interesting than anything I was going to say. Apart from when he tried to teach us how to read the Bible. I could have done a better job but I resisted.

So the problem O R and you will understand concessitur so what I should have kept quiet, how did it help for me to speak. It was on vowel points. He demonstrated the folly of trying to pronounce tetragammaton with the vowel points of ADNI. First problem was very minor but he was straw dog shooting. We shouldn't say Yehowa he says only foolish charismatics say it that way, how would you like it if your name was mispronounced. Ok Ollie I know the others didn't have a clue it would have washed over them but for starters nobody says Yehowa that's how the germans pronounce Jehovah. He went with for time immemorial Xtians asserted the right of high priests yada yada so we must say Yahweh. I could tell you how the full and frank discussions went on, and although I had read a five page critique of the vowel points by the Sacred Congregation for the Liturgy co-approved by the CDF and one other Vatican Congregation of which he was aware and just said they must be forgiven, and I was with him, fuck the Vatican let's look at the arguments thanks to John the neoCat for that he too must bear his part in this shame. Unfortunately just because he has a doctorate in hebrew and I dropped out of hebrew in the first few weeks at Ushaw because it's too much work if you lust after result and I never got to learn the vowel points, I do happen to know a lot more about the whole tetragammaton thing because as you will know I am at heart an heretical gnostic qabalist which dubious credentials. And I give the impression with my 3 weeks of hebrew that I am a cutting edge Hebrew Scholar and he didn't call him out on that that day. Oh the interesting thing I hadn't noticed before call me stupid when I suggested so why do we call him Jesus don't that upset the lad. Is to get the name Yahweh saves you add a Shin to tetragammaton with the same vowel points so why don't we say it saysJehovah saves it doesn't read Yahweh saves.

Now I know the whole thing is scholarly convention, this is such a rabbinic argument it reminds us that we are still Jews. Take any ancient language on one level why insist on a particular pronunciation since no one knows how the ancients used to say the words we choose conventions Oxford and Cambridge have distinct conventions for Latin, as does the Church. So afterwards I thanked him for the lecture said he was inspiring on the text very prayerful but I thought he was showing off with the hebrew. At which he said I have a doctorate from Rome and I don't wish to discuss it further with you while pointing out that my fault was expecting certainty and absolute truth and believing I alone knew it. It is indeed a foible I have long sinced ceased trying to control but I certainly could make far more efforts hiding the times when I know I am right and the lecturer is utterly butterly wrong.

I later checked up the vowel point thing with wiki, which is far better than doing a doctorate and far quicker to look up than dusty manuscripts. I will add again he is wrong. Caflicks never pronounced the name till we were allowed to read the Bible sometime after the 1950s. The convention for Yahweh is attributed to a 19th century german (which I had correctly guessed during the lecture I was on a roll Ollie) and we only really do it to show our superiority to Jews and there are so many better ways we can do that now, and the problem with that protocol is it encourages the lecturer to show off his superiority the mouths of babes and sucklings and upstarts in the audience to show up the lecturer, we need a better model of salvation.

So I had a dream that Jenny one of the Lancastrians I loved showed me the shorts I had bought her (dream shorts I would never sir how very dare you suggest) but they had become very tight hot pants. Perhaps you have been washing them too often I suggested not wishing to imply she had filled out during her stay. I then said I had wondered if you were disappointed with them after I gave them to you because you didn't seem to want to shop much after. She replied but there really isn't that much variety here, and I imagined a small mall with four showrooms in it and thought oh ok.

So easy one I have got very bored here not enough stimulation and begun to think most of the lecturers are ignorant and stupid and in need of correction. Thank god they don't allow me to take many lectures. There are vague contingency plans afoot.

Oh and Jenny she was a one I had dismissed her early on in the 3 week course as a pizza and shopping gel then she started saying really thoughtful things. On the last day of the course I had one small chat with her and she told me that she had been heading for a 1st class degree but was studying 24-7 on anti-depressants and constantly in tears. It was only when her father drove her home one Xmas and she noticed his crying all the way home. Real Northernman go figure. She had a moment of grace not that agnostics call it that. And now she parties has fun and is cruising towards a 2:1. One I shall always love.

Well orf to Kottayam tomorrow evening all I have to do is stand at the right bus stop. Hmm. Worst case is I miss the bus. And I thought I'd ask Fr Jose if he could arrange for me to see Irom Chanu Sharmila. It's a prison visit technically and I think she has now been moved to Delhi where his family lives. If we don't ask we don't get. Trick is to keep it simple.

Dear Fr Jose, thank you for your offer of hospitality in Delhi. If it were possible for you to arrange for me to have a prison visit to see Irom Chanu Sharmila the Manipuri prisoner-of-conscience whom I understand is currently detained for force feeding at a hospital in New Delhi I should be very honoured to take up your offer of hospitality to enable me to make the visit.

And then I have to learn to not speak when lecturers say foolish things. It's good grace not to pull people up on little mistakes if they have a song to sing. Not that I would ever correct Irom's grammar once she started to explain her bounden duty. I shall try visualizing the Other always as an altera Irom.

The Psycho-Biology of the Body and Personality

So the first speaker gave this really funny joke it was so funny he prayed first we would not be scandalized. All about cognitive reframing within married life.

I had one correction and two quick questions. He had said all animals can swim apart from Humans. Throw one in water they swim but we drown because human voices wake us sort of thing. I told him my belief was that no primates can swim naturaliter but humans can learn to swim. I have never thrown primates into a lake and I base my belief on an episode of that time travel programme when Dr Beckett took the form of a space chimp. But I didn't tell him that I said I had read it somewhere since he had read his thing somewhere he gave me that one.

The two questions I had oh my memory is failing. Second was on Twins. Oh Roger Bannister and the 4 minute mile. Within a month 30 peeps had broken the four minute mile with the year 300. Now I could have gone with a qabalistic or Hindu numerological understanding but I suggested perhaps it might not have been a change in belief, what's the word it's from CBT relapse prevention theory never mind, I said in the West they are getting more Spiritual just as in India they value Science more. Morphic Fields. Bannister changed the morphic field around humanity enabling everyone to run faster. Not sure what that Usain Bolt will do for us.

And on Twins he mentioned a famous twin study, the one where the sisters are reunited on the same day and wear the same outfit same mannerisms etc. I just said in my experience white people lie (I don't mean you Oliver) and they have a congenital fault for lying when it comes to twins studies. He said in his experience they didn't lie all the time and CBS reported the story. I think he means Fox CBS.

After the talk a Missionary Catechist with the poor CMIs the ones who want to do mission work with the villages instead of getting american degrees and having high level talks with Brahmins invited me to visit his centre 7 hours away. I thanked him and said of course if he was serious. I don't think he was. I did explain I might be a seen as a trouble maker but the point of the day is if I start believing everyone loves and respects me then they will.

Oh I did have a crack at his friend mind. How come they just use american heroes to explain the theory, Ford Napoleon Hill and Admiral Lord Nelson. And how come they always boast about their american masters and doctorate I answered because their Indian ones give them shame, the white man's degree they believe has more juju. He agreed but he didn't then tell me proudly about his american degrees. Ah the priest was a good american motivational speaker but they are ten a penny in the US and I was really here for some good old fashioned Indian stuff, I should have gone to California. All the same a lot cheaper here and if I go to California might as well get a good barber and tailor and start giving seminars.

Second talk by Fr Matthew oh so he is the one I should have been talking to. Brain Biology bullshit. I wasn't completely dismissive but I think I took too long formulating the question more of a counter thesis saying he really didn't know what he was talking about but in a really humble tentative way, and I put on my tentative, sensitive voice and everything. Anyway I managed to get the last line out before he could complain.

He had said research in the 1970s had dismissed the effectiveness of drug treatment for angina. My dad died in the 70s because there was no treatment then for heart disease apart from the willow bark which Hippocrates mentioned. I suggested perhaps modern research stresses statins as the greatest single advance in the treatment of heart disease unless of course it was all a belief system hype about the latest. I stopped critizing drug multi-nationals when I came to India and saw folk outwith basic medical health care. Then I suggested one extreme was type 1 diabetes until the discovery of insulin it meant certain death after chronic painful illness in 20 years regardless of your beliefs. Then my favourite the Social and Spiritual aspects of TB. The biological model has TB as symptomatic of a Bacterium. Bacteria respond to anti-biotics. However TB dropped in incidence from 1850 onwards and anti-biotics were discovered by Fleming only in the 1940s. Hence TB can be seen as a symptom of a social disease. Poor housing, and malnutrition throw up TB. Cure the social diseases and the body will take care of itself. With the Spiritual disease it is a form of spiritual ascesis similar to the Jain final way of Moksha, a bit like She Irom Chanu Sharmilah, I did not forget her, Oh let my left hand wither. It was the ascesis of Carmel that promoted the TB, the embrace of the beloved, eating the corruption of the body away from within until only pure inviolate spirit remained. Yep it pissed him off. But in all humility this time I really had something far more impressive to say than the speaker, although the first guy's joke was really funny.

What's the point in asking a trouble maker not to ask questions it's like telling Irom not to go on Hunger Strikes. Though I will take a break during the bible study which is at 3.30 unless the speaker is really interesting, he is more likely to be offering basic info so I'll bring my bible check out the references and pray with Martha Irom.

I could be perimenopausal

It used to irritate my uncle when people continually blamed colonialism as the get out of jail free card. I am pretty sure an Indian was offering me a lecture on history, I think I passed with bad grace on how the British East India Company. But just for this blog, a potted History of England. In 1066 the French invaded, but they aren't the problem, before them continual Viking invasions and pillage rapine, but I they aren't the cause, before them, Saxons and Angles, and before them the Roman Empire with its brutal but they aren't the real cause. The first invasion was by a bunch of Indians who poured over thousands of years ago, and overran the peace loving indigenous population of Britain, those wonderworkers who had built the early civilizations of stone henge.

Anyway so I asked my favourite liberation priest over brekkie whether he had heard of Irom Chanu Sharmila, didn't ring a bell. How about the North Eastern States. Then he starts with the lecture about Britishers and their problem solving ways, they come here and try and fix particular problems which apparently were all caused by colonialism anyway did I know the History of the British East India, so I kept interrupting, because he needed not to be heard out, but it didn't stop him offering the holistic response of Indian spirituality to quote Ghandhi, What do I think of Holistic Indian Spirituality, that would be a very good idea.

I am not suggesting that I want to marry the woman right now. I am a romantic I have to have fallen twooly madly deeply, not just goggle eyed admiration for another of India's Saints how glorious O Lord in your eyes is the death of your holy ones. But if anyone felt the urge to write a letter of protest to His Excellency Manmohan Singh I am pretty sure you'd get a lecture on imperialism colonialism and your awful problem solving misunderstanding.

So what is the special about the rape murder and genocide is it like the special rape murder and genocide that goes on in every other country that practices it against its own people.

The fuss in Manipur if I may offer my simplistic Britisher problem solving eye, is here and now outwith blaming the British, or global warming. In 1958 India passed a law to allow any squaddie to shoot to kill on suspicion. It's a bit like the sus laws that we had in London allowing police officers to search people on suspicion of loitering with intent. The main difference is all the police were allowed to do was to search black people, a bit humiliating perhaps if you are courting with one of your bitches (i believe that is an affectionate term for a gentleman's beloved mi'lud) but that's all they were allowed to do, and outraged by the violation of civil liberties and mainly because it really didn't drop crime levels just pissed off black men who were courting the law was repealed. So it's sort of the same thing in the North East except pig ignorant brave as two short planks low paid squaddies with no local entertainment can rape murder the people they were supposed to protect and given that whatever they do is legal if they had a suspicion no one has ever been punished for their crimes against humanity. These shit heads don't give me citizenship I am going to wait for one of the ministers when they visit France and serve them with an arrest warrant for War Crimes and Crimes against Humanity.

So Irom Chanu Sharmilah, which is quite a mantra, quite a japa, she was a young woman then only about 2 million in Manipur, she was heading off to another protest rally what good does it do, when she had to pass by ten of her own people shot by jawans, squaddies. It's a lawless place every body goes there to train in basic terrorism guerilla warfare, nice protective hill country, air force hates that sort of terrain, give them a nice desert where they can carpet bomb any day of the week, and she does the Ghandiji thing and goes on a hunger strike until the law is repealed allowing their own soldiers to shoot rape murder commit genocide on suspicion. Oh yeah a bomb went off killed some soldiers so they turned up in a village and started shooting because it was suspicious I guess.

She is arrested every year for attempted suicide for which the maximum punishment is one year in jail. So each year she is re-arrested. How come they never tried that with Ghandi-ji Oh I know because the evil British were in charge.

So maybe I am perimenopausal though I suspect I have been so since I was 16 but just because I have suspicions doesn't give me the right to commit genocide against anyone. If I could just get a local indian theologian to understand this simple point. Oh but there I go, just a problem solving Britisher, if only I had studied in India and developed the capacity either for smarmy supine sheep like regurgitation of authority's views or the grace to become a type of saint that can be found only in the East. Martin Luther King Jr was ok for a black guy and Francis of Assisi neat trick with that wolf, but if you want to understand the suffering servant of Isaiah, Isaiah the Asiatic then you need to come to Asia and if the Eurovision Song contest is anything to go by, Israel is not part of Asia.

The saints here are the most beautiful. I'd much rather be a saint than a martyr. Perhaps I should take things more slowly. Sod marriage I think I am cut out to be a brahmacharya though that raised a laugh with the joker priest hmmph. Ah well off to Psycho-biology of the Body lecture an additional for Saturday. Fr Binny the leader whom I had accused of not informing me of lecture times and places was quite insistent that I attend. Of course I'll attend i can't worry about Irom all day and even if I can I can do two things at once now I have found my japa.

It's probably just the anthropology of the hero and my latent nazism one thing I really don't understand about my brother, he gets excited about a second hand BMW series seven but so what it's a thing, Irom Chanu Sharmilah she is like a fairy, a wounded angel, she is the princess in the hidden castle, we burst in I say I am Desmond Mary Coutinho I am here to rescue you and she replies with those immortal words. But my bro he don't get it. I shall be so taken aback when we enter the kindom of heaven if it turns out he was right in the end.

Of course I am going to set up an Irom Chanu Sharmilah scholarship just as soon as I have access to any of my mother's money. And thank you but I am not interested in a second hand BMW or a personal equity plan or swamp land in Arizona. I want an Irom Chanu Sharmilah scholarship and some young bright ingenue from England with a problem solving brain stupid enough to accept it.

It was a bit like the masked magician

They have him on Indian Telly too so I read we only watch Star Singer Season IV which I think maybe coming to a finale. So yeah I am glad I was discouraged from asking questions or comments. Who listens. He has too because otherwise I may repeat the question or anyone listening will think he didn't understand. And I am pretty sure that Roger would be able to tell me what is meant by le persicate est susceptible etc and whereas I know what it doesn't mean it spoils the trick for someone to show you how it's done, especially if you don't then take up the ethical. Apparently the answer is to set up political institutions humanized by la petite bonte. He'd be great to do a Levinas for Dummies book just needs a good illustrator. We got the lecture outline. A 15 page expanded lecture notes which don't have much bearing upon the lectures and a book published today of the lectures which are probably something different too but I got it 90 rupees for a book. Oliver should do all his publishing in India then ship them over to the US/EC there is probably some law against it but aint that what they do in the fashion industry. Does that mean poor little tykes are engaged in slave labour working in laser printing factories, or does it mean the poor tykes who were being abused at 18 hour days flogged to death at nights are now unemployed because it's all done by computers. This mornings sermon I quite liked. We all talk today about feminism, and we have seminars and symposia on women's rights and conscientization and we produce reports and set up commissions and yet for our women nothing changes. For whom do we make these reports and arrange these symposia. It was a pre-liturgy of the word reflection, just sat for a minute in place of the homily. The silence of Wittgenstein.

Yeah it's the tangents that appeal to me, but probably not to many others, though always one or two who come over to thank me for the question or point I raised never more than three. He had answered a point on the evil of terrorism, how evil is the shadow of good, that there is an essential violence within goodness. That's why Levinas argued for the need for institutions for a political ethical to reign in the violence inherent to goodness, and for la petite bonte to reign in totalitarianism from institutions to humanize them. He was a good intro. I was going to mention that woman in Manipur has been force fed for the past seven years tubes down the nose can't do that in Europe, she is on fast unto death to stop the violence against women.

Seems to me it depends on the State, the British are gentlemen say what you will about them. Thus Ghandi-ji could kick them out with ahimsa and satyagraha. The IRA could kick them out by bombing mainland pubs and Canary Wharf. I exaggerate but you need to bring terrorist violence home to the voters with money and power. But in Chechnya when their terrorists attacked Moscow they faced an evil greater than Hitler or Stalin. Putin committed genocide in Chechnya in response with the international community cheering him on as part of the war against terror. There is already terrorism in the North Eastern States continual constant vicious. I understand in theory there is a better way a more enlightened way that stems from the certain faith that the Other is closer to me than myself. I cannot kill the Other because I will wipe out all that is good and true. Substition: I am responsible for the ethical behaviour of the Other also. I am responsible for the Other more than anyone else. Until we all say that evil will always have the last word. So no the key is not to demand that the northern tribals and communists come south and bomb Delhi or Mumbhai Hyderabad and Bangalore. Or to ask the People's Republic of China to sort the mess out. So I typed Woman Hunger Strike Manipur and got her name, Irom Sharmila. A book has come out recently on her I read the review in the Times of India but it's one of the three I have now on order at the bookshop. They may cost 90 rupees to buy but they don't seem in any rush to sell them.

I shall write a strongly worded letter of protest to his Excellency Dr Manmohan Singh protesting Look don't laugh, ok I may a stupid old britisher fart though I object to the term britisher but it's either that or well I don't got anything else, I could raise my tapa I guess but that seems to be proving more ethereal and I am not convinced I will know if I have raised the tapa or not, Brahman raised tapa to create the world, it means exertion or ascetism or who knows, we may not understand Sanskrit terms but by the way the Lecture team members used the term final speech and final concluding speech they don't know what the simple English word Final means) against this basic human rights violation of a vulnerable citizen suggesting that if he spent more time trying to sort out the human rights violations he perpetuates in the forgotten northern states rather than boasting about having a nuclear submarine that may not have any nuclear second strike facility given the apparent failure of the test missiles subsequently covered up by corrupt officials and I suggest his campaign against human rights violations by his own security forces take precedence over anti-corruption measures this is India I am not going to be unrealistic in my demands, and yes this is a demand Human Rights are to be demanded than he would have a better claim for India being a first world nation. Having come from a first world nation I believe Dr Singh is setting his sights far too low. However as matters stand India is competing more in the league of barbaric nations unfit to assume a place in a modern civilized world. Only five rupees for national mail. Something like that I'll be lucky to get a reply they usually only reply if you use a recognizable letterhead so if I could get a DVK one but if I told them what I intended I doubt they'd let me have one. T'was different when I was in Ireland. I got a reply from the US Ambassador on treatment of Gulf War detainees which became Gitmo. I remember at the time the woman who would be honourable fiancee no 2 said she too would write a letter but would give false name and address because she thought she might end up on a no fly list and it has happened to friends of hers or some such. I figured that was something though I didn't offer to marry her there and then. What I have learnt is that our security forces are not that competent. Someone may end up being punished and since I have a portugese name let many a Brazilian engineer tremble with Greek Phrike over what letters I shall write next. He may soon learn what being responsible for my ethical behaviour means. Apparently that was what went wrong with Marxism/Communism. Instead of saying I am responsible for the Other, for the widow the orphan and the stranger, those without the basic relations, they took power and said we are the widow the orphan and the stranger and anyone who don't like what we do will die in a Gulag. If you put it like that why did anyone go along with it. Because within Goodness there is always violence and evil is it's shadow, and because they betrayed the Good, theirs is a greater fault. Woe to the one who betrays the Son of Man.

I will write to Manmohan to demand immediate action that isn't a violation of Irom's fundamental human rights and that does not denigrate and drag through the pig excrement India's miserable reputation for the treatment of its women dalits and tribals and I shall pray to Irom please do not die.

Last day of Dharmaram Memorial Lecture ting

I think I'll move on to Derrida and Merleau-Ponty and some guy called Adolpho someting like that very revolutionary and yet hard to grasp aren't they all. But one more little rant. Art forsakes the prey for its shadow. Wickedness and magic the despised tricks of the devil are enshrined as altars in poetry. I am sure Burrgraeve will say what he meant was, but what he meant was is not that at all. Il y a is the residue of existence heard as background noise when you place the seashell given you by your pearl diving former lover to your ear. He does mention insomnia but it's described in extensive quotes from the Scottish Play and then he slags off art as idolatrous and Shakespeare as overintellectual.

I think I'll try nab Burrgraeve when I see him next on campus. The really interesting ideas are the tangents. But for all his talk of Rabinnic Temples of Qabalistic Hermeneutic I think all he'll want after the last lecture ends is to get laid get drunk and sell some more double glazing unless coco is available for an early night, why should he be any different from the rest of us. But I'll nab him and find out for sure if opportunity allows.

And instead of being unhappy here I reflected it's a hell of a lot more like home than the last place I was at. Praxis humanizing activity is what makes a dwelling a home. And the direction of travel is better here for now. In fact all I think I have to do to ensure comfort here is to hang on to a few thousand rupees in me wallet. Which leads me to the counterintuitive urge to give all my money away.

It was that monthly recollection priest what did that I am sure the feeling will pass once I find myself a decent pastry. All predators even a carrion animal will allow others to eat a corpse once they have had their fill. Give from your want or you are just a sated carrion animal. He was a fundamentalist charismatic with a sense of humour my kind of priest. Why can't they heal lepers and raise the dead, why rather do they carry a purse and two coats hmmm. He told some good yarns. One was when he was in Amurka studying he had no parish duties so assisted at his mass of a Sunday. He explained the way westerners come for blessings with arms crossed as well as for the eucharist. (I don't think Indians get the whole I came for the feast but I am not eating they'd assume you had come to insult them). So this five yr old kid comes with hands out begging for a host. A woman behind says no Father he has not had his first communion. So he goes on administering to the other lines. But the kids stays there begging with his hand outstretched. The humour was, well I wasn't under any Bishop, I was free in that sense. So I thought do I have the right to refuse this boy who is begging for the Lord. He prayed and then asked the boy to open his mouth and he placed the host on his tongue and thought no more of it. Later the grandmother telephones and you can write the rest but he saved a marriage and won souls for Christ yeehaw. Almost makes you want to believe. Of course I believe, but not in that literal naive way, I am trying to believe in a post-phenomenological way, tell me of this way Derrida Merleau-Ponty and you other guys that I may believe.

I got an email from the Park Guest House attached to the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry saying not to worry I should only pay for the days I spend with them I had booked a week and will stay only four days. Now the thing is it's never that much money here. Whatever I do or buy. I can be ripped off or get an extraordinarily generous bargain but take the week at Pondicherry, more could fall out of a hole in your trysers in Ealing and you wouldn't think twice of it. I almost went off into a rant about how dare they not allow me to attend the counselling classes and the special masses do they not realize I am paying double the normal fees until I realized it wouldn't buy you one night with one of Berlusconi's hostesses and I am pretty sure if you want sex it's gonna cost a lot more and not just money.

I think I am happy as a gyrovague, the bus shall be my cell, after a few hours the back plays up a little but if I can get to sleep. The worry is the term semi-sleeper. It's like semi-virginity. Probably means something only to Levinas. Ah well toodle pip I'd like to get a nice seat right at the back so have to leave now.
